Abdominal obesity is strongly associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and death, even after controlling for body mass index (BMI). This means that even if you are not overweight, having a large waist may mean that you are at a higher risk of health problems than someone with a trim waist.

A high waist circumference ”apple shape” correlates best with higher amounts of visceral fat.

Visceral fat is the deadly fat. It is the fat inside your abdomen and inside your organs, like liver and muscle. If your BMI is over 30 you likely have significant amounts of visceral fat

Visceral fat is more metabolically active than subcutaneous fat. It drives inflammation and causes insulin resistance, which promotes diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia and ageing

Thankfully, visceral fat is also the fat you will lose first on the Insulean Programme. This is why the health benefits start much earlier than perceived weight loss.

Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 to 29 is considered to be overweight, while over 30 is obese.

People often assume you need to be really fat to be at risk, but once you hit a BMI of 25, your risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer all begin to increase.

You should join the programme if you are overweight or obese (BMI 25-30+) or if you have a large waist circumference, ≥80cm (31.5 inches) for females or ≥ 94cm (37 inches) for males.

Top Tip: Measure your waist circumference across the bellybutton.

You will lose weight if you follow the programme. And you will keep it off. Weekly consultations address weight plateaus early and weight regain is prevented because your biochemistry will change.

A minimum of 12 weeks is recommended to achieve good results and start getting you healthy. You are welcome to continue attending a weekly maintenance session after this. As the programme is personalised to you, weekly adjustments are often necessary to ensure you achieve your goals.

It is definitely possible, particularly if you have not had diabetes for many years. By addressing the real reason behind your weight gain (which is often poorly understood), you can eventually come off your medications, including insulin.

We do not. Appetite suppressants and fat binding pills have unpleasant and sometimes serious side effects and can interfere with the absorption of vitamins.

You will also learn that fat does not make you fat, so blocking fat absorption does not make sense. These pills are not necessary to achieve lasting weight loss.
